Pepe is the most accomplished versatile saluki of all-time. He and his sire Prophet are the only two salukis to be AKC Best in Show, Best in Field and High in Trial winners (and both are also multi Best in Specialty show winners). Pepe adds to that record a HIT in agility and a National Specialty Best of Breed. Always owner-handled.
Pepe was bred by Margaret Ferrando and Patsy Hoy and came to me as a stud fee puppy. What a deal! He finished with all major wins at supported or hound show entries. A highlight was winning Best in Futurity and High in Trial Agility within hours of each other at the Saluki National. As a new special, he quickly picked up six Group Firsts within eight shows. He has both ASFA and AKC Best in Field wins. He finished his CD in three straight trials, starting with High in Trial at the National. Pepe is uncannily smart, always fun and a natural born show off.
And he won Best of Breed at the 2013 SCOA National Specialty!
Pepe came out of retirement and won his 26th and 27th Hound Group Firsts at age 10 years! And 28th at age 11!
At age 11 1/2, with 8 points to go for his Platinum title, Pepe suffered a devastating spinal stroke that left him 100% paralyzed in three legs, and 98% paralyzed in the fourth. He began the greatest challenge of his life, unable to walk for weeks, but with greatest determination slowly he was able to move first one leg, then the other, just fractions of an inch. He never gave up, and using his trick training to target he was gradually able to move his legs more, and then to walk, and with agility training, to trot. He never gave up, and pushed himself to do weaves, even jump, and even the teeter (no, Pepe don't do that!!!), and eventually catch a frisbee. Four months later he once again trotted around the show ring, and won Select Dog to his son Ponzi at the C-FLASH specialty for 5 pts. Now needing 3 more, he won his final Best of Breed for 4 points. Achieving his Platinum was a nice milestone, but just being able to live a normal life is our greatest celebration. He still has a ways to go---but he's Pepe, and Pepe doesn't do quit.
